Documentarians
Hi,
It's been a mix of good (political) and bad (economic) news as 2008 winds down.
Here at THE COFFEE HOUSE, we got a piece of very good news when, on December 6,
the show was honored with the “Monty” for Best Public Affairs program at the annual awards ceremony at Access Montgomery. This was our eighth Monty in as many awards programs since 2000. Meanwhile, we keep spreading our wings: This month we're pleased to announced the show will begin airing in Sacramento, California; Northwest Connecticut; Hollis and Phippsburg, Maine; Manchester, New Hampshire; Princeton, New Jersey; Taos, New Mexico; Fargo, North Dakota; Amherst, Ohio; and Kent, Washington. Scroll down for a complete schedule of channels carrying THE COFFEE HOUSE.
Of course, expansion is a double-edge sword as it raises our production/distribution costs. We think it's worth it and if you agree, perhaps you could so signal by making a quick, secure, end-of-year, tax deductible donation by clicking HERE. You'll never donate to a leaner organization: No one takes any salary for their work on the show. But it's still an expensive proposition to produce. So, many thanks in advance for your help!
Best wishes for the holidays and 2009,
Mark

"TOO BIG TO FAIL" ENCORE PRESENTATION: THE AUTO RESCUE PLAN
Following on the heels of the Wall Street bail-out, the Big 3 automakers made repeated visits to Washington to shore up taxpayer support for their flagging industry. We explore the economics and politics of saving the American auto industry with David Lightman, White House correspondent for McClatchy. (Host: Mark Cohen)
WILL THE OBAMA STIMULUS PLAN SAVE ILL-CONCEIVED HIGHWAY PROJECTS?
The devil is in the details: Where will the billions for infrastructure to put Americans back to work be spent? On repairing our deteriorating roadways and building clean mass transit, or for new, environmentally dubious highway projects that would otherwise die for lack of public funding? We speak with Stewart Schwartz of the Coalition for Smarter Growth. (Host: Mike Tidwell)
CHAIRMAN BENJAMIN CIVILETTI ON THE FINDINGS OF THE MARYLAND COMMISSION ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
The Commission, established by Governor Martin O'Malley, found considerable racial and geographic disparities in the application of capital punishment in Maryland, and that the costs to incapacitiate via execution are substantially greater than to do so by a life sentence. The Commission is chaired by Benjamin Civiletti, US attorney general under President Jimmy Carter. (Host: Senator Jamie Raskin)
Also on this edition of THE COFFEE HOUSE… Poet Naomi Ayala is "Window Shopping"...We go salsa dancing at Glen Echo Park in Maryland… a preview of Anna Huong's 2000 painting "Peace Mural" exhibit; and the jazzy sounds of singer-songwriter Lea.
